Looking back: The 2010s

Digital media are increasingly shaping everyday life, electromobility is becoming popular and the climate movement is shaping the decade. Leuze introduces the AMS 300i laser positioning system, which solves a wide range of applications in intralogistics, for example. OPC UA makes a major contribution to the digitalization of industry. Find out more about what makes the Sensor People tick.

Fridays for Future

In 2018, the Fridays for Future movement gained worldwide attention for the first time when pupils and students took to the streets for concrete action against climate change. The organization, led by Greta Thunberg, inspired millions of young people and led to global climate strikes. Her tireless commitment to sustainability shaped the decade and raised awareness of environmental issues.

Digital boom

In the 2010s, the world experienced a digital boom: smartphones became ubiquitous and apps such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp revolutionized communication. Streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify shaped the entertainment industry.
This era marks a global shift towards a networked and digital society, influenced by innovative technologies and platforms.

E-Mobility

The 2010s marked a turning point in electromobility. The Tesla Roadster, which went into series production in 2008, shaped the image of electric cars as a lifestyle product with impressive performance. Over the course of the decade, modern electric cars such as the Mitsubishi i-MiEV and the Nissan Leaf became established in mass production, making the technology suitable for everyday use and affordable.
This period was decisive for the transformation of the automotive industry towards sustainable mobility.

Innovative laser positioning systems for intralogistics

The AMS 300i laser positioning system is a product highlight from the 2010s.

It is used wherever the position data of moving system parts, such as high racks or pallets, need to be recorded quickly and accurately. Measured data can be output to two interfaces in parallel, enabling effective positioning, diagnostics and parameterization.

The system is still used today in one of our focus industries, intralogistics. Distances to moving system parts can be precisely determined over a distance of up to 300 meters. Limit situations can be detected by the integrated function catalog, and early notification of a failure is provided by comprehensive diagnostic functions. Measured values can be transferred to a control system in milliseconds via various Ethernet or fieldbus interfaces.

Today...

With the expansion of its portfolio, the AMS 100i, Leuze is launching the most compact positioning system currently on the market. The product enables millimeter-precise positioning of up to 120 meters.

The system can also be used in a wide variety of environments. The AMS 100i works perfectly in the range from +60°C to -30°C.

OPC UA: A technology for the digitalization of industry

In the 2010s, digitalization not only made great strides in private areas, but also in the industrial environment - keyword "Industry 4.0". Digitalization is taking place right down to the device level, i.e. individual sensors or actuators are also being further developed so that they can communicate with other devices and levels. The "OPC-UA" standard has been defined as a common communication level. Its use opens up new possibilities in addition to higher system availability due to comprehensive condition monitoring, as well as the possibility of making production more flexible down to batch size 1. Cloud-based solutions are used to network locations worldwide.

Leuze developed such a solution in 2016: The BCL 300i stationary barcode reader was equipped with an OPC UA communication protocol. In addition, an IOT hub for Microsoft's Azure cloud was built into the device itself. This means that data is exchanged directly between the sensor and the cloud - an intermediate controller is not required. This type of integrated Azure connectivity had not previously existed at sensor level - Leuze is also a technological pioneer in this area.

In order to make the best possible use of the technological development in customer applications, Leuze organized the so-called "practical workshop" from 2017. In direct discussions with customers, it was discussed in which applications OPC UA can be used and what specific advantages this offers in individual cases.

Today...

OPC UA is still the relevant technology driving the digitalization of industry. The focus is primarily on standardizing the data profiles of machines and devices in order to achieve smooth cooperation between components. Security aspects are also becoming more important than ever in order to prevent cyber attacks.

And: the use of the BCL 300 with OPC UA equipment has proven its worth with customers to date.

Leuze – The Sensor People

The term "Sensor People" was coined at the beginning of the 2010s - a designation for Leuze employees. At that time, red shirts were a trademark of the Sensor People. The color red was worn in photos in customer magazines or at trade fair appearances.

However, the Sensor People are united by much more than the color red: Founded as a family business in 1963, Leuze looks back on an exciting history, which you were able to get to know in the course of this journey through time. Appreciation, team spirit and cooperation as well as reliability and trust have always been shared values.

The exceptionally long period of employment, often spanning several generations, reflects the trust and solidarity.
